I don't like to admit this, but I'm the WORST shopper. Don't be fooled, I LOVE to spend shop but I'm horrible at finding a good deal. I consistently get suckered into reading those glossy catalogs when they arrive in the mail and head on out to the store to get the latest "must have" full priced item.
Well, I'm changing my ways! Or at least I'm making every effort to change my ways. Case and point - we need new kitchen stools to fit underneath the breakfast bar. The stools we currently have are too tall for the space. My little legs can barely fit underneath without cutting off my blood circulation, never mind a grown man's legs! In the "old days" (i.e. yesterday), it would have been a trip down to my local Pottery Barn for a full priced purchase. Well, the "new and improved Lo" had the hubs get the power tools out of the garage to do some re-purposing. Any project that requires the use of power tools is a worth while project in his eyes. I need to start taking advantage of that!
Here's the before. See? Too tall (please ignore the mess on the counter - how embarrassing!)
We measured & marked a couple inches up from the bottom of the legs and cut the wood using a jig saw (I didn't even know we had one of those in the garage!)
Then sanded the bottoms to even out the legs. No one likes a wobbly stool. I also put little felt furniture tabs on the bottom of each leg to prevent any scratches on the floor.
Then a quick trip Joann Fabric & Craft Stores for some cotton batting and 2 inch foam. Everything used to complete this project we already had on hand (other than the batting and foam).
The rest was a breeze. After measuring (twice), I cut the batting, foam and fabric down to size. First, we secured the batting and foam to the stool seat using a staple gun. Then did the same process with the fabric.
...and "Lo and Behold" we have ourselves some super cute and comfy kitchen stools. No more smooshed legs!! But the best part... I only spent 10 bucks!

I have these stools and I hate them right now. I was going to go buy new ones but I have to try this first. Love the fabric too. Great choice.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ama! FYI, I found the fabric on fabric.com. Its called Richloom Solarium Outdoor Kirkwood Cherry and its about $9 a yard. You would need one yard for 2 stools this size :)
DeleteSo super cute...what a wonderful repurpose job. I have these exact same stools and just stenciled them. But now, I'm loving the idea of fabric!! LOVE! Just featured this on my fan page. Thanks bunches for linking up!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great redo! I love the bold fabric. It really brightens the area. (Glad to see I'm not the only one with a cluttered counter, too. People live in our houses. They can't always be perfect, right?) :)

What good timing! Now that Christmas is over, my next project is to recover 2 stools like yours, except they already padded & are covered in brown leather (fake) - I hate brown! I love the fabric you used. Can't wait to get mine covered.
ReplyDeleteLove. Trying it tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteI have very similar barstools from World Market and was becoming very bored of them-- plus, they were developing scratches on the seats from lots of use. Your tutorial (found via Pinterest) helped me to transform them into brand-new, gorgeous pieces! I used a black and white Waverly damask canvas fabric, centering the design on the seats, and I used 1" foam, because it fit more with the proportions of my stools-- they are still super-comfortable and snazzy, to boot. Thanks for the tutorial! I never knew upholstering could be this easy, and I only shot myself with the staple gun twice. :-)
ReplyDeleteIs that work from Digital Printing Fabric? Because if it is, it's great. I've always known that technology will do something in this industry that will be revolutionary and really going to make our lives and work a lot better.
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled upon this on pinterest by chance. I bought these stools from Target and they're going to be delivered today. I was worried that they were going to get boring after a while. Problem solved! Great post. These are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI saw this right after I received the stools from Target. I also had just found the perfect remnant of fabric at Hancock Fabrics. After buying the foam and batting, I went to work. Then I realized I should secure the foam to the stool first because it kept slipping when I would pull the fabric. As I started to staple, I realized I should have ironed the fabric first. Did all of that, got back to work, then found I should have tucked the edge of the fabric in before stapling because when I trimmed the fabric, it left a very rough edge that was very visible. So I did, then ran out of staples, put new ones in and realized they were too big apparently. Now I need to go buy more, not sure what size, guess I'll just have to guess. Anyway, I'm a novice at this kind of stuff so it would have been very helpful to have this type of info before getting started. Thanks though for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteHi. I love this idea. I actually got two of the same stools from goodwill for $10. I'm in the process of painting the legs and was wondering abut the foam. Did you cut the foam to for exactly to the size of the seat or is it a bit smaller?
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm in the process of fixing the exact same stools. Did you cut the foam exactly the same size of the seat or a bit smaller.
ReplyDeleteHi! The foam was cut to the size of the seat and I used a little spray glue to keep it in place so tht the foam wouldn't slide around when I covered it with the batting and fabric. Good luck!!! Let me know how they turn out :)
DeleteOh.my.goodness. Love this idea and I just passed up the same stools on clearance. ($10 each at Fry's Marketplace) I will stop there in the am and use some fabric that I have had tucked away for a special project. THANKS!! Great post!
